Psychiatric diagnosis in liability claims

Dr Doron Samuell is a psychiatrist from Professional Opinions who specialises in personality and the role that personality plays in the development of disabilities. He has acted as a medical expert in litigation involving psychological conditions for federal, state and local governments.

Dr Samuell will share his views on the assessment of psychiatric issues which are prevalent in liability claims. This will include:

• The assessment and diagnosis under DSM-5 of various psychiatric issues such as depression, PTSD, adjustment disorders, illness behaviour and also burnout (which has recently been added to DSM-5).
• Functional overlay – where a physical injury is exacerbated by psychiatric issues.
• What documents or information should be provided to a psychiatrist to assist with assessments.
• Some indicators of malingering or exaggeration in relation to psychiatric issues.
