Fixing Building Defects

Fixing Building Defects

Much of Sydney has seen significant construction activity in recent years. Significant new medium and high density residential buildings appear almost overnight and many apartments are sold off the plan. Sometimes, defects arise and need to be fixed, but what happens when things go wrong and the defect causes residents to be evacuated on Christmas Eve?

Simon Garske of Mirabelle Engineering Services and George Bejjani of McLarens Loss Adjusters will use the recent example of Opal Tower and the report commissioned for the NSW Minister for Planning and Housing to explore what actually went wrong. The discussion will address:

• The risks associated with fast tracked apartment construction based on the current process of design, construction and certification.

• The challenges of insuring these types of projects and whether the insurance industry can offer a practical solution.
