17 September 2019 - Developments in Class Actions – Part 2: A review of recent Class Actions and settlement trends in Australia; what does the future look like?

Julian Sexton SC of Tenth Floor Wentworth Selborne Chambers, Rebecca Gilsenan of Maurice Blackburn and Ari Abrahams of Lander & Rogers will share their views on the current trends in Class Actions. Julian, Rebecca and Ari are all directly involved in the Brisbane Floods Class Action, that is currently awaiting judgment after a lengthy trial.

They will be discussing questions including:

• Will we see a deviation from the recent trend of shareholder Class Actions toward a rise in consumer actions arising from product defects and defective buildings?
• Has the increase in litigation funders brought a commercialisation of Class Actions; or has it allowed victims of tragic events access to justice and compensation that they wouldn’t otherwise have perused on their own?
• The role of insurers on both the plaintiff and defendant side of class actions.

The New South Wales Claims Discussion Group are fortunate to have Julian, Rebecca and Ari share their wealth of first-hand experience in both bringing and defending Class Actions in Australia.
